In 1994 I was just like most people I knew in the world.
I was working hard, long hours, for SOMEBODY else. I ran the sale department, and I was good at my job. When I'd been hired I was promised a base salary, a commission on everything I sold, and an override commission on everything the sales staff sold. My annual review came up in December, as usual, and HR told me that I was doing a great job and gave me a maximum score. I expected a raise. MY BOSS came in for "the meeting" where I thought sure as heck I'd get one. He sat down (in MY chair), looked me straight in the eye, and told me "You're making too much money." In all honesty, it took me a few minutes to register and react. Meanwhile, he was explaining that I made even more money than he did and that, simply put, wasn't "right." Really? My next move was to reach for the phone, dial and wife, and tell her to come pick me up. My boss looked at me like I was crazy, and I quietly explained, that I really didn't CARE that I made more money than he did, and If he thought that ANY sales person was going to take a "hit" to their income for outperforming expectations, then he had no basic grasp of what sales is all about and I had no time to explain it to him. I took my stuff, and I walked out. I've never worked for anyone else again in my life, ever. My wife asked me what I was going to do. I told her I was going to open a computer store. She looked at me like I really HAD lost my mind while blurting out "You don't know anything about computers." I bought a book about computers and the rest is history. 24 years later, we're still in the "computer" business, although we've branched out a bit. Today there is a family of J. Walter companies: 1.
